Travel Tips

What documents do I need if I plan to travel outside of Spain?

A valid passport along with the appropriate visa or tarjeta de estudiante.

When you apply for your visa before you leave for Spain, inform your local Spanish Consulate that you are planning to travel outside of Spain during your stay to ensure that the Consulate issues a visa that permits multiple entries into the country.

If you are traveling outside of the Schengen area, review the documentation requirements well in advance of your journey. In most cases, this information is posted on line; you can also contact your destination’s consulate in Spain.

If you are traveling within the Schengen area, see the following website: http://europa.eu/travel/doc/index_en.htm#visa.

What if I forget to take my passport?

Students from the United States should note that a U.S. drivers’ license is not an appropriate form of ID for air travel. Students have been known to board flights with just their license, but then have trouble returning to Madrid.

What if I am denied travel and cannot return to Spain?

The University cannot work in an official capacity to circumvent travel laws. Therefore, students will have to make sure that you have all of the appropriate travel documents needed and that they are valid throughout the length of your trip. Students should contact their own embassy in the country they are visiting in case they are denied travel or their passport is lost or stolen.

Can I be excused from classes for travelling?

No.

If my flight is cancelled or delayed, am I excused from my classes?

Students should make every effort to ensure that they take full advantage of their classes. This means scheduling independent travel so that it does not interfere with your class schedule in any way. However, if there is a change to your travel itinerary which will cause you to miss a class, notify your professors and Student Life (studentlife-madrid@slu.edu) right away.   While this will not excuse your absence, it will allow us to know that you are safe and it will facilitate your return to class.

What do I do if I get sick while travelling?

Keep your Sanitas card with you at all times. Although coverage is limited, you can use Sanitas while you travel (http://www.sanitas.es/sanitas/insurance). From outside of Spain, dial +34 91 345 6584. Look up the country of destination’s national emergency number as well.

The Office of Student Life is limited in the support we can offer you while you are away from Madrid; nevertheless, it is important that we are notified right away in the event of an emergency.

What do I do if someone steals my wallet or passport?

Have on hand the emergency contact information for your home country’s embassy.

Do I need to let someone know if I will be traveling?

Let someone know how to contact you in the event of an emergency. Email your travel itinerary to your family back at home and to studentlife-madrid@slu.edu. Leave a copy with your host family in Madrid as well.
