Security Notes

Explanatory Note

The U.S. Department of State encourages all U.S. Citizens abroad to stay abreast of developments worldwide. At our campus in Madrid, we apply this directive to all of our students, who come from over 60 countries. And to help you do so, we prepare updates on a regular basis as conditions warrant. We also provide links to the most recent Department of State and local U.S. Embassy Public Announcements as well as an updated list of important emergency contact numbers. We also encourage you to check out regularly the English version of El País, one of Spain´s most important dailies, as well as the Overseas Security Council´s Daily News Service, to learn about what's going on around you in Spain, Europe, and the world. The more informed you are, the better your decisions abroad will be.

Updates

(January 20, 2008) On Saturday, January 19 Spain's Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba announced that the Spanish Civil Guard arrested 14 radical Islamists of Pakistani and Indian descent in a raid on a mosque, a small prayer hall, and several apartments. Police confiscated material for making explosives and timing devices and contend that the 14 were plotting a terrorist attack in Barcelona. Rubalcaba has not ruled out further arrests. Spanish authorities are on alert in light of the arrests and the upcoming general elections scheduled for March 9.
