Fourth Annual Festival of Spanish Song hosted by SLU Madrid in Granada

"I'm reserving every month of July because I know that every year this will be even better, and I will be there," Teresa Berganza, the world-renowned mezzosoprano affirmed at the close of SLU Madrid's Interpretation of Spanish Song Festival in Granada at the historic Conservatorio Superior "Victoria Eugenia."

From the 12th to the 22nd of July 50 music students from 15 countries participated in the festival courses for song, guitar, piano, and dance, which culminated in the competition for the masters classes with Spain's world-famous diva.

Other distinguished artists include José María Gallardo del Rey, one of Spain's finest classical guitarists, pianists Miguel Zanetti and Jorge Robaina, famed, in part, for their brilliant work as accompanists to performers of the Spanish vocal repertoire, and Juan Miguel Jiménez Miranda, one of Spain's leading flamenco guitarists.

SLU Madrid’s music professor and festival organizer Nan Maro Babakhanian M.A. (Music) commented that this festival is finally providing a pedagogical base for the study of Spanish song, which is absent from the world's great conservatories of music.

SLU Madrid participates in meeting of the Council of European Conferences of Bishops

From June 21st through 24th Carolina Aznar, Ph.D. (Archaeology/Theology) represented the Madrid campus in Rome at the European Meeting of University Professors entitled “A New Humanism for Europe: The Role of Universities.” The event was organized by the Council of European Conferences of Bishops in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, whose signature gave origin to the beginning of the European Union. Two thousand participants from all over Europe and other countries re-examined the role of universities in the formation of human beings as well as in the elaboration of cultural processes related to the European identity through keynote lectures and 47 academic sessions. Dr. Aznar presented a paper on “Archaeology and the study of the cultural and historical background of Jesus.”

Two of the highest moments of the Meeting were the Eucharistic celebration at Saint Peter’s Basilica presided by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, and the Audience with HH Pope Benedict XVI who spoke on the importance of Christianity in the appearance of European humanism and shaping the humanism of the future.

VISITING PROFESSORS AT SLU MADRID
Professor Jerry Hurley, a dear academic colleague on our campus since 1988, passed away in early September. Jerry served our campus faithfully primarily as an instructor of ESL and English. Those of us who knew him well will always remember his steadfast commitment and loyalty to his faith, family, friends, and profession. As an instructor to hundreds of non-native English speakers on our campus, Jerry's kindness and caring way shone through both in- and outside the classroom – semester after semester, year after year. We always could count on him to help individual students, staff, and faculty with English. Without fail, they would all come away most grateful for Jerry's technique, patience, and absolute sincerity of purpose. We'll all cherish these unique gifts he shared with us for the rest of our lives.
