New SLU Venues on the Madrid Campus

In October we put the final touches on the conversion of our former men’s residence to a new library and cafeteria complex when we inaugurated the Everett Rice Memorial Room, which houses a collection of art books that the late Professor Rice donated to our campus and also serves as a lovely room for all of our art history courses.
In January, we inaugurated the opening of Manresa Hall, a new rental acquisition, located just behind our administration building. The Andalusian-style building houses new staff and faculty offices, classrooms, and music and art studios. Both buildings also provide garden and terrace spaces for students to gather and study outdoors, when the Madrid weather permits.
And a new venue for the 5th Annual Interpretation of Spanish and Latin American Song
Since its premier in 2002, the Interpretation of Spanish Song summer courses have introduced the rich heritage of Spanish art song to voice, piano and guitar students from the world’s foremost music schools and conservatories. This year we’re delighted to welcome the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid, Spain’s oldest conservatory, as a co-sponsor of the festival.
Since its founding in 1830 by royal decree, the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid has been the dynamic center of music instruction and education for generations of Spanish artists. The Conservatory is located in the museum district of central Madrid and offers classrooms, practice rooms, a performance auditorium and one of the most important musical libraries in the world with approximately 130,000 books, 11,000 music manuscripts and 3,000 hours of recorded music, all at the disposal of students and faculty alike.
Publication of selected papers of the Converso and Morisco Studies Conference Series
The academic publishing house Brill has announced that it will publish an anthology of selected papers presented at the first and second conferences on Jewish and Muslim converts to Christianity in Spain's history that our professor Kevin Ingram, Ph.D. (History) has organized and hosted at the Madrid Campus over the past three years. In its review, Brill pointed out that “very few attempts to pursue comparative approaches and to explore Jewish and Muslim converts side by side have been made,” adding that “there is much need for such a series, which will with regard to methodological issues have importance beyond the field of Iberian history and culture.”
