Model United Nations
On February 14 and 15, 2008, more than 260 students had the opportunity to debate and resolve current international issues together at the Madrid Campus Model United Nations Conference. SLU Madrid students, under the direction of Program Director Tara Stone organized the event which was sponsored by the USA United Nations Association, Merrill Lynch, and the United Nations Association’s Global Classrooms initiative, which is implemented by the Fulbright Commission in 13 bilingual public high schools in Spain. At the conference, these students stepped into the shoes of UN Member State delegates to debate current issues on the UN’s agenda such as: Darfur, global warming and the social responsibility of the private sector.
Following the SLU Madrid Model United Nations Conference, two students travelled to Bremen, Germany to participate in a collegiate level Model UN Conference. In May, two Saint Louis University, Madrid Campus students will help staff the International Model UN Conference in New York.
In appreciation of this important initiative, on April 17 the United States Embassy in Madrid hosted a reception to honor the participants and organizers of Saint Louis University Madrid’s first Model United Nations. This project has also benefited the Madrid campus students by spawning more interest by the Madrid government in collaborative arrangements for our students in local schools.
