JOSÉ PERIS LACASA
Composer in Residence
Lecturer on Spanish Music


Born in Maella in the province of Zaragoza, José Peris Lacasa completed his musical training at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Madrid.  He subsequently studied composition with Darius Milhaud and Nadia Boulanger in Paris, Carl Orff in Munich and Igor Markevitch in Salzburg.

Mr. Peris Lacasa has held faculty positions in the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música, Universidad de Alicante and finally in the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He has served as a juror for all the major musical awards in Spain, including the Premio de Composición Reina Sofía and the Premio Internacional de Composición Oscar Esplá.

As a composer, Mr. Peris Lacasa is the author of hundreds of works that span all genres. Among the more memorable are the motete O Sacrum Convivum which was written in honor of His Royal Highness Don Juan de Borbón and was performed in the Capilla del Palacio Real de Madrid and for the official mass during the papal visit. His compositions have been performed by such orchestras as the Nacional de España and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

In addition to his contributions as a teacher and composer, Mr. Peris Lacasa has been tireless in his labors to preserve some of Spain's most important national music treasures, such as the organ and Stradivarius quartet in the Royal Palace. In addition, he has completed and updated in the last two decades the catalogue for the royal palace's musical archives.

In 1966 he was elected a member of the Reale Accademica Filarmonica di Bologna and has received many awards including the Orden de Isabela la Católica, Orden del Mérito Civil, Orden Civil de Alfonso X el Sabio and the Gold Medal from the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Alicante.
