Alicia Nafé’s highly expressive singing and impeccable vocal technique have earned her the reputation of being one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her generation. After beginning musical studies in her native Buenos Aires and receiving all the major singing awards of that country (Promociones Musicales, Harmonicus and Sociedad Hebraica), she continued her training with Lola Rodriguez Aragón in Madrid and soon won the first prize at the Maria Ros de Lauri Volpi competition and then  the Francisco Viñas Prize in Barcelona. She subsequently continued her musical training in Vienna, Paris, Rome and Milan.

Ms. Nafé began her international career in the 1970s with Verdi’s Requiem in Toledo’s Cathedral with the National Orchestra of Spain (ONE), conducted by Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. This was the beginning of an important artistic collaboration with the ONE which has continued to the present day, including performances in music festivals in Granada, Sevilla, La Coruña, Barcelona, San Sebastián and Cuenca, as well as international tours to cities such as Lisbon, London, Philadelphia and Hong Kong.

Ms. Nafé’s interpretation of Carmen caused a sensation in her performances at the Metropolitan in New York, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Finnish National Opera in Helsinki and the Teatro Real in Madrid. Other important roles in her career have been Rosina, Cherubino, Dorabella, Isabella, Ottavia, Sara, Adalgisa, Leonora, Charlotte, Sesto, Dorabella and Orfeo, which have taken her to the La Scala in Milan, Vienna State Opera, Covent Garden in London, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the opera houses in Prague, Brussels, Naples, Catania, Venice, Barcelona, Antwerp, Cologne, Hannover, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, Bayreuth, Hamburg and Berlin.

Recitals have played an important role in Ms Nafé’s career. Always adding new works to her repertoire, she has helped to promote Spanish and Argentinian composers such as López Buchardo, Ginastera, Pompeyo Camps and Guastavino. And recorded Manuel de Falla’s Siete Canciones Populares Españolas and El Amor Brujo (in its original version of 1915) for Denon Japan, and El Amor brujo and La Vida Breve for Naxos with Oviedo’s Symphony Orchestra conducted by M. Valdés. She has also recorded La Vida Breve for Deutsche Grammophon (Germany) with García Navarro, Denón (Japan) and Telarc  (USA). And has also worked with other labels like Sony CBS, Polydor, Decca, L’Oiseau Lyre and Erato.

At present Ms Nafé is a faculty member at the Conservatorio Superior de Música in Palma de Mallorca, while teaching master classes in auditoriums and institutions around the world. Additionally, she is frequently selected to sit on juries in international singing competitions.
