Converso and morisco are the terms applied to those Jews and Muslims who converted to Christianity in large numbers and usually under duress in late Medieval Spain The Converso and Morisco Studies conferences and publications examine the implications of these mass conversions, for the converts themselves, for their heirs (also referred to as conversos and moriscos) and for Medieval and Modern Spanish culture.
In recent years the conversos and moriscos have become important concerns in Spanish scholarship, stimulating studies not only on the character of the converts and their descendents, but also on the nature of Spanish culture and identity. It was in response to this growing interest that Saint Louis University, Madrid Campus, began in 2004 to hold an annual international conference, examining converso and morisco themes. The publication Converso and Morisco Studies offers a selection of these conference papers expanded and edited into essay form.

The Converso and Morisco Studies website has been created to coincide with the first volume of the Converso and Morisco Studies series. We hope that it will serve as an online forum for scholarly interaction and debate.
