The Campus will mark the beginning of the Season of Lent this week with Ash Wednesday Masses (and the distribution of ashes) at 1:50 pm and 5:30 pm in PRH 16.  At the 5:30 pm Mass the SLU Concert Choir will enhance the prayer by its singing of Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus, Schubert's Heilig ist der Herr and Franck's Panis Angelicus.

Discover Sweden, the third biggest country in the European Union.  Taste some typical Swedish delicacies, and learn about the history and traditions of this multicultural civilization.... there's more to Sweden than just Ikea, saunas and Abba!  / Thursday, March 10, 1:45 – 2:45 pm in the Student Lounge.

The Art History Program is pleased to welcome Mercedes Gonzáles de Amezua, Curator of the Museum of the Royal Academy of San Fernando, who on March 15 at 2:30 pm in the Rice Room of the library will be giving a talk entitled, “Discovering the Purpose of the Royal Academy of San Fernando and its Collections.”  All faculty and students are welcome to attend!  If you would like to do so, please contact Dr. Fabiola Martínez (fmartin9@slu.edu).

The Career Services Office Announces March Opportunities!  A number of information sessions and workshops have been organized for the month of March to help students successfully identify future employment or educational opportunities >>

The Office of Student Life, in conjunction with Counseling Services would like to invite all study-abroad (“students to take part in a 30-minute discussion group designed to allow students to examine the effects of alcohol and to develop strategies to avoid unwanted consequences (such as sexual assault) from imprudent use of alcohol.   For more information, or to sign up, please see Ana or Ariadne in Student Life.  Groups will meet in PRH 16 from 2:00 to 2:30 on the following days: Group 1 (for male students) Tuesday, March 8 // Group 2 (for female students) Monday, March 14 // Group 3 (for female students) Wednesday, March 16.  Whether or not you participate in a discussion group, all students are encouraged to take the E-Chug Alcohol Check-up.

Loyola Ignatian Pilgrimage Retreat (Friday morning, March 11 – Sunday evening, March 13) / open to students of all faiths.  Taking place in the beautiful Basque country of northern Spain at the birthplace of  Ignatius of Loyola , the founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), the retreat provides a great opportunity to deepen one’s self-understanding  while also learning more about Ignatius’ life and how his values and way of understanding reality have shaped Jesuit activities, including education, ever since.  The return trip to Madrid on Sunday includes a visit to the castle where Francis Xavier (Ignatius´ university friend who became one of the original Jesuits) grew up. 

All current SLU-Madrid students who were also enrolled in the fall semester must stop by the Student Life Office (PRH ground floor) before Friday, March 11 to renew their student ID card and pick up their new Sanitas card.

Marking the Season of Lent >>

Win a gift certificate with your writing!  Until April 29, the Languages & Literature Division will be accepting student contributions for the 2011 Undergraduate Writing Prizes.  Categories include academic writing in English, and creative writing in both English and Spanish.  More information and the application form are available at the Writing Prize website.  Students are also invited to consider submitting their writing to: the 2011 Norman Mailer High School and College Writing Awards for Creative Nonfiction (deadline: April 28), and the Student Writing Contest of Transitions Abroad (deadline: March 8!).

Student Life “Best Spring 2011 Photo Contest” – win a prize!  Share with Student Life your photos of academic and non-academic trips, day-trips, sports and service opportunities in which you have participated or will be participating.  You can also share photos of your host family, or of campus friends enjoying Madrid sights during this Spring 2011 semester.  On Tuesday, May 3, the Student Life Team will choose the best photographs and award prizes! >>

SLU-Madrid Campus Ambassadors are student leaders who, upholding the University’s mission, commit themselves to representing the University at a variety of campus programs and events.  In turn, Ambassadors are given a number of special opportunities for personal and professional development.  If you are interested in learning more about what it means to be a Campus Ambassador, you are invited to attend the information meeting on March 15, or contact Ariadne Ferro in Student Life.  Please note: March 25 is the deadline to apply to be a Campus Ambassador for the 2011-2012 Academic Year >>

A Picasso museum in a medieval town? Join Campus Ambassadors on Friday, March 18 for a day trip to visit the beautiful Paular monastery and Buitrago de Lozoya , a picturesque medieval town with its own Picasso museum.  The 40€ fee includes a guided tour in English along with roundtrip transportation by private coach. Minimum of 20 people required.  Sign up in the Finance Office.  (Please note: Refunds for day trips cannot be given if a student fails to attend for whatever reason, including failure to arrive by the scheduled departure time.)

Stuck on your homework?  Need help with your English?  With your Spanish?  The English Writing Center and the Spanish Language Center are located in the entry area of Manresa Hall.   The schedule of the English Writing Center is: Mondays & Wednesdays, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm, and Tuesdays & Thursdays, 12:00 noon - 2:00 pm.  The Spanish Language Center is open Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and Tuesday & Thursdays, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
