Eligibility: Non-U.S. study abroad students from universities outside the U.S.

Origin and purpose: The Amy King Memorial Scholarship gives underprivileged students from colleges and universities outside the U.S. a chance to study abroad as undergraduates. The award covers full tuition, housing, and transportation costs. Relatives and friends of the late Amy King, a study abroad student on our campus, graciously contributed the original capital for the fund. We replenish it each year with contributions from students, faculty, and staff during a number of on-campus fundraising events. The scholarship keeps alive Amy’s exemplary commitment in her life to reaching out to help others everywhere – as she did so exceptionally during her stay here.

Alexander Méndez Reyes
Study abroad, Spring/Summer 2004

Home university: Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA, The Jesuit university of El Salvador)
Major: Psychology

For Alex, our first recipient, this was the first time he had ever left his home country, El Salvador. After taking courses in the spring semester and summer session, he worked as a camp monitor at our English-language summer camp for Spanish secondary school students and returned to El Salvador in July, 2004, to finish his undergraduate degree.
