First-year Students

First-year Summer reading

During the summer prior to their first semester at Saint Louis University, incoming students read a common book. For the past three years, we have encouraged our new, first-year students to participate in the First-Year Summer Reading program sponsored by our campus in St. Louis, Missouri. We do so because it helps link our two campuses, providing all Saint Louis University students a shared intellectual experience. It also creates opportunities for students to engage in discussions with each other and with faculty and staff.

The goals of this program are:

• To provide a shared intellectual experience that prepares incoming students to engage in discussion on various levels on an ongoing basis.
• To address questions and life issues being faced by incoming students.
• To either implicitly or explicitly introduce students to academic life and the uniqueness of Jesuit higher education, reflective of the mission of Saint Louis University.
• To provide opportunities for incoming students to dialogue with each other, and faculty and staff on campus.
