Admission Policy
SLU Students who wish to use the library must show, on entry, a current SLU Madrid Campus Identification card (ID Card). The ID cards should be actualized each semester in the Student Life Office. An actualized card is one with a color sticker on the reverse side indicating the current semester. Students who have lost or forgotten their ID card can obtain a temporary pass from SLO. Students who do not have valid ID cards may be asked to leave the library and will not be able to make use of certain services offered by library, including loans of all types.

Loans
Students must show a current SLU Madrid ID card in order to process loans of library materials. Students may take out on loan books from the general collection as well as older back issues of journals. Reference items, the more current issues of journals, newspapers, and most reserve items and audiovisual materials can not be checked out on loan. They may only be used in the library. Students are allowed to have out on loan a maximum of 10 items at a time.

Loan Periods

  • Books - General collection: 21 days. Renewed one time only, unless requested by another user. All book loans are subject to recall after seven days if another patron asks to use them. Recalled items must be returned immediately. Some books have more specific loan limitations.
  • Reserve books: most may only be used only in library for two-hour loans; certain items may be taken out on short loans of 1,2 or 3 days (limit: 2 books). No renewals normally granted.
  • Journals: older back issues lent for 3 days. No renewals normally granted. Loan bans exist for issues considered most current.
  • Audiovisual materials: these can only be used in the library. Any exceptions would need authorization of library personnel. Not renewable.

Students are asked to return loaned items on time and in good condition, out of consideration for other users. Fines and/or fees are charged for overdue, damaged or lost material.

  • Fines and fees:
    Overdue items - fines
    • Books from general collection: 30cents/day and book
    • Journals and reserve materials: 50cents/day and item
    • Audiovisual materials: €1.50 / day and item (day loan)
Fines should be paid when overdue items are returned. Those students who fail to return materials after notification will not be able to take out additional materials on loan until matter is resolved. If this matter is still pending at the end of the semester, then a hold will be placed on student’s grade record until item has been returned and/or fine paid up.

Sanctions are also applied to students who have damaged or lost library materials. Normally this consists of a payment of a replacement fee – a set  fee that must be paid prior to the end of the semester in order prevent a hold on student’s grade record. Consult library office about fees.

Students who take materials out of the library without permission will be asked to pay an automatic €5.00 penalty as well as €1.50 for each day item(s) remain out. Real abuse could lead to a loss of library privileges.

Reserve Materials

At the request of faculty members the library maintains on “Reserve” a number of materials for students enrolled in specific courses.  These may be print materials from library collection such as books and journals, photocopied materials, or audiovisual items (CDs, DVDs, CD-Roms.)  Most of these materials can only be used in the library or loaned for very short time periods (1.2 or 3 days.  These reserve materials are available in the library office.  In addition, some instructors may request the library to offer reserve items electronically and these can be accessed by clicking on this link. The library also maintains one copy of most textbooks on special reserve shelf at circulation desk on main floor.  Textbooks on reserve are available exclusively for use in the library for two hour loan periods, renewable for one additional hour if no other student has asked to use book.

Photocopy Service
A photocopy machine is located on the main floor.  “Self service photocopying” is available for students who have previously purchased a “photocopy card” from the Finance Office (Valle 34, main floor, Monday – Friday, 8:30pm – 5:00pm.) Cards are available for 2€/10 copies, 5€/45 copies or 10€/100 copies. The library offers a photocopy service for the copying of library materials. Out of respect for copyright legislation, the library will only copy a maximum of 35 pages per book or a single article in a journal. Photocopies are not made on demand. Requests will be returned normally within a two-hour period (Monday – Friday).

  • Photocopy service hours: Monday – Friday: 9:00am – 5:30pm
Orders placed after 5:30pm, on weekends or holidays will be returned after 11:00am the following work day. To order photocopies, ask for and fill in the forms available in the library office.

  • Photocopy fee: 10 cents per page
Payment for photocopies may be made in advance or at pick up. No copies will be handed over prior to payment. Students who fail to pick up copies are still responsible for the cost of service rendered. If at the end of the term they still owe payment, a hold will be placed on their grade record until matter is resolved.

Computers
The library has two computer labs available for student use.  In order to use these computers, students need to open an account at the Computer Services Department (Basement, P. Arrupe Hall, Valle 34.)

The library is equipped to handle wireless laptops. For assistance with the respect to the use of wireless machines, consult the Computer Services Department (Basement, P. Arrupe Hall, Valle 34).

Miscellaneous Norms

In order to provide an atmosphere conducive to study and research, library users are asked to maintain silence, to refrain from smoking, eating or drinking in the library and to keep their cellular phones on “off”.

Students wishing to study in groups can make use of study rooms on 2nd floor of library.  Reservations must be made in library office.  Rooms can be reserved for two hours at a time.

Students are asked to come equipped with their own stationary materials (paper, pens, pencils, erasers, rulers, etc.) as the library will not provide them with these items.

The library normally communicates with its users by campus email. It is therefore advisable that all users check periodically their SLU email account, as they will be responsible for responding to the notices posted there. To activate your account, check with Computer Lab Office (Basement, P. Arrupe Hall, Valle 34).

Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Services  (ILL/DDS)

All students may request through the campus library office electronic delivery of articles from journals and/or books available in the print collection of the home campus libraries – material not available electronically through other library resources.  There is no charge for this service.  Please note that we can not request books and/or journals for loans

Graduate students may also occasionally make requests for materials available in collections of non-SLU libraries.  Consult with library director.

All requests for copies must be placed through the Madrid Campus Library Offices, as ILL/DDS is a service that functions between libraries and not individuals and libraries.  To place an ILL/DDS request, please fill out the appropriate form below and send.
