Students

Admission Policy

SLU Students who wish to use the library must show, on entry, a current SLU Madrid Campus Identification card (ID Card). The ID cards should be actualized each semester in the Student Life Office. An actualized card is one with a color sticker on the reverse side indicating the current semester. Students who have lost or forgotten their ID card can obtain a temporary pass from SLO. Students who do not have valid ID cards may be asked to leave the library and will not be able to make use of certain services offered by library, including loans of all types.

Loans

Students must show a current SLU Madrid ID card in order to process loans of library materials. Students may take out on loan books from the general collection as well as older back issues of journals. Reference items, the more current issues of journals, newspapers, and most reserve items and audiovisual materials can not be checked out on loan. They may only be used in the library. Students are allowed to have out on loan a maximum of 10 items at a time.

Loan Periods

No fines will be charged on overdue books from general collection returned within seven days after the due date. However, if book is returned after the seven day “grace period”, student will be charged the fine, retroactive to original date due.

Fines should be paid when overdue materials are returned. If fines are still pending at the end of the semester then a hold will be placed on student’s academic record until matter has been cleared up. These same sanctions also apply to students responsible for replacement or repair of lost or damaged library materials. If student patron has not returned a book within 90 calendar days after the semester/term has ended, he will automatically be charged a set fee for its replacement ( books published in Spain =  30,00€/book;  books published abroad = 60,00€/book.)  This same fee will also apply to students who lose a book during the semester. A charge is also levied for books returned to the library in damaged condition:  20,00€.)  In case of journals or audiovisual materials not returned, lost or returned in damaged state, patron will be charged the cost of replacement of issue or copy.

Students who take materials out of the library without permission will be asked to pay an automatic €5.00 penalty as well as €1.50 for each day item(s) remain out.

All outstanding library fees and fines not paid up by the end of given academic term will automatically be charged a billing and processing fine of 5,00€.

The library management sends out on regular basis reminders about overdue materials which patrons are asked to honor. All overdue items are thoroughly searched prior to placing holds on grade records or initiating final billing. Failure to receive a notice does not, however, exempt borrower from responsibility to return materials on time and is not grounds for cancellation of fines or fees.

Abuse of borrowing privileges and/or failure to pay up on time fines exceeding 30.00€ could result in suspension of borrowing privileges.

Course Reserves

At the request of faculty members the library maintains on “Reserve” a number of materials for students enrolled in specific courses. These may be print materials from library collection such as books and journals, photocopied materials, or audiovisual items (CDs, DVDs, CD-Roms.)  Most of these materials can only be used in the library or loaned for very short time periods (1.2 or 3 days. These reserve materials are available in the library office. In addition, some instructors may request the library to offer reserve items electronically and these can be accessed by clicking on this link. The library also maintains one copy of most textbooks on special reserve shelf at circulation desk on main floor. Textbooks on reserve are available exclusively for use in the library for two hour loan periods, renewable for one additional hour if no other student has asked to use book.

Photocopy Service

A photocopy machine is located on the main floor. “Self service photocopying” is available for students who have previously purchased a “photocopy card” from the Finance Office (Valle 34, main floor, Monday – Friday, 8:30pm – 5:00pm.) Cards are available for 2€/10 copies, 5€/45 copies or 10€/100 copies. The library offers a photocopy service for the copying of library materials. Out of respect for copyright legislation, the library will only copy a maximum of 35 pages per book or a single article in a journal. Photocopies are not made on demand. Requests will be returned normally within a two-hour period (Monday – Friday).

Miscellaneous Norms

In order to provide an atmosphere conducive to study and research, library users are asked to maintain silence, to refrain from smoking, eating or drinking in the library and to keep their cellular phones on “off”.

Students wishing to study in groups can make use of study rooms on 2nd floor of library. Reservations must be made in library office. Rooms can be reserved for two hours at a time.

Students are asked to come equipped with their own stationary materials (paper, pens, pencils, erasers, rulers, etc.) as the library will not provide them with these items.

The library normally communicates with its users by campus email. It is therefore advisable that all users check periodically their SLU email account, as they will be responsible for responding to the notices posted there. To activate your account, check with Computer Lab Office (Basement, P. Arrupe Hall, Valle 34).

Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Services  (ILL/DDS)

All students may request through the campus library office electronic delivery of articles from journals and/or books available in the print collection of the home campus libraries – material not available electronically through other library resources. There is no charge for this service. Please note that we can not request books and/or journals for loans

Graduate students may also occasionally make requests for materials available in collections of non-SLU libraries. Consult with library director.

All requests for copies must be placed through the Madrid Campus Library Offices, as ILL/DDS is a service that functions between libraries and not individuals and libraries. To place an ILL/DDS request, please fill out the appropriate form below and send.

Directory of Madrid Libraries

Introduction

Madrid has a great variety of different types of libraries, the majority of which are open to the public, thus providing a rich resource for investigative purposes for both students and other academic researchers. This directory consists of those libraries that the Madrid Campus Library considers would be most useful and interesting for members of our campus community. Aside from these introductory comments, the listing consists of the name of the library and link to its website where viewer will find most complete information about the library, including location, services and policies as well as access to its online catalog. To facilitate usage of this directory, the libraries have been grouped according to types.

When visiting these libraries it is advisable to carry with your SLU ID as well as official identification (eg.: Passport, Residence Card, Spanish National ID) as you will often be required to show these upon entry. Such identification will also be necessary if you plan to apply for a library card when this available (eg. Public libraries).

Public libraries, with exception of the National Library, will have most of their resources in Spanish. However, academic, governmental, museum and other specialized libraries will have many materials in other languages, including of course English. Loan privileges are available at public libraries, with exception of the National Library. You will need to apply for a library card, which will be extended immediately in most cases. The remainder of the libraries will generally only offer reader privileges. Some libraries may require a letter of presentation in order to access their collections. To obtain this letter contact our campus Library Office (library-madrid@slu.edu).

The hours of the libraries can be found on the individual websites. However please keep in mind that some libraries may close during evenings and on weekends, keep reduced hours during summer months and that many are completely closed during the month of August. In addition, most university libraries may limit access to their facilities during mid-term and final exam periods (usually months of February and June).

For clarifications of the above or more specific information about these libraries contact SLU-Madrid Campus Library (library-madrid@slu.edu).
