Why become a Nurse?

Bachelor of Science in Nursing with International Preparation

The American Association of College of Nursing states baccalaureate prepared nurses should be able to, “apply knowledge of social and cultural factors to the care of diverse populations.1”  Saint Louis University (SLU) offers a program in nursing which prepares students for the responsibilities and challenges faced by today’s health care practitioners in regard to diversity and globalization. Current census information shows that more than 1 in 8 people living in the United States are of Hispanic origin with 2 in 5 Hispanics being foreign born2. These demographics show the need for healthcare workers to know and understand Hispanic culture and the Spanish language.

Nursing students begin their undergraduate studies at the SLU - Madrid campus, where they complete their first-year and sophomore level coursework. During this time nursing students can immerse themselves in the Spanish culture, study the Spanish language, and interact with students from around the world. By doing so, students increase their cultural awareness and competence of diverse populations and are in a setting which supports language acquisition and mastery. More specifically, specialized courses are available, such as Spanish for Nursing, to develop a professional level of Spanish outside conversational language and the experience of clinical hospital rotations in Spanish hospital settings. These customized educational experiences are meant to prepare future nurses who are tolerant and competent to care for diverse populations in health care environment by giving them first hand experiences during their educational formation.

Then, nursing students transfer to the SLU - Missouri campus, located in the United States, for their junior and senior level coursework. Nursing students who choose to study 2 years in Madrid followed by 2 years in Missouri receive the same diploma as nursing students who study all 4 years at SLU - Missouri campus. All nursing students receive a Saint Louis University Bachelor of Science in nursing university degree.

SLU’s nursing program encourages young women and men to be leaders in the field, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based practice, the development of skills and application of knowledge and techniques, and information literacy. These skills are bound seamlessly together with engagement of ethical reasoning and the opportunity to practice leadership promoting advocacy, collaboration and social justice to form nurses who are also socially responsible citizens. Together, this type of nursing education prepares nurses ready to enter health care environments in the United States or globally, to work in other countries or with other international nursing opportunities such as non-government opportunities (NGOs).
