MA in Spanish

Program & Examination Requirements

Our MA program seeks to give the student a generalist foundation in the areas of Spanish Peninsular and Latin American Literature as well as in the area of Teaching/Applied Linguistics. A maximum of 6 credit hours may be taken at the 400 level with special permission from the Languages & Literature Division Chair.

Requirements for the MA in Spanish  (for students entering as of Fall 2011)

• A total of 30 credits (10 courses) including:
  
        ▪ SPAN 520 Intro to Literary Criticism
        ▪ Two courses (6 credits) in Peninsular Spanish Studies
        ▪ Two courses (6 credits)  in Latin American Studies
        ▪ Two courses (6 credits)  in Teaching or Linguistics

The remaining three courses (9 credits) may be distributed according to interest.

• Final written examination based on the MA in Spanish Reading List
• Final oral examination

Requirements for the MA in Spanish (for students who entered prior to Fall 2011)

• 6 hours of required courses (two of the following)
  
        ▪ SPAN-504 Methods and Technology for the Teaching of Spanish
        ▪ SPAN-520 Introduction to Literary Criticism (required in Madrid)
        ▪ SPAN-518 Contemporary Spanish Culture and Civilization
        ▪ SPAN-519 Contemporary Latin American Culture and Civilization
  
  
• 24 further hours of 500 level courses (2 may be taken at the 400 level)
• Final written examination based on the MA in Spanish Reading List; (guidelines for written examination question types) 
• Final oral examination
