SOC-293 Discovering Archaeological Secrets

Curriculum: Fulfills social science requirement for A&S, Business and Engineering
Description: What are the origins of coinage? Is the Shroud of Turin authentic? How do we reconstruct ancient trading practices? Why did the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean prefer brass to gold? An engaging introduction to some of the most important discoveries of recent archaeological research, with an emphasis on the contribution of modern scientific techniques. Use of case studies from different regions of the world to illustrate the role of such techniques as x-ray diffraction, radiocarbon dating, isotope analysis and metallography in revealing some of archaeology's most intriguing secrets.
