POLS-252 Introduction to African Politics

Curriculum: Fulfills IR requirement; fulfills social science requirement for A&S, Business and Engineering; fulfills cultural diversity requirement for A&S and Engineering; honors credit available for eligible students.
Description: The struggles for power on a neglected continent. Study of governments and political processes in Africa, with a focus on the Sub-Saharan region. Topics include the nature of the African traditional heritage, the colonial experience, nationalism and independence, the challenge of nation-building, African political parties, the role of the military and the contributions of different theories to the understanding of African politics. Course includes excursion to Africa.
