PHYS-113 Introduction to Astronomy

Prerequisite: MATH-120
Curriculum: Fulfills natural science core requirement for A&S, Business and Engineering
Description: Reading the skies. Study of the cosmic structure: calculating distances and mapping the Universe; Kepler’s laws, binary stars, and general relativity; celestial light and spectra; scientific models of starbirth, planetary systems, protostars and protoplanets, white dwarfs, pulsars, black holes; the formation of galaxies and the Big Bang model. Mandatory excursion to the European Institute of Astrophysics in the Canary Islands, one of the world’s finest observatories.

Mandatory Trip: Tenerife (Canary Islands), estimated cost € 515; fees must be paid by first day of class.
