PHIL-105 Historical Introduction to Philosophy: Self and Reality

Curriculum: Fulfills philosophy Requirement for A&S, Business and Nursing
Description: How it all began: Western philosophy, mathematics and science as they emerged in ancient Greece. Preliminary treatment of seminal work of the Presocratics and Socrates; primary focus on the writings of Plato and Aristotle. Analysis of the Greek contributions to logical, metaphysical and ethical thought. Course excursion to Greece integrated into fall term.
Current Text: Introductory Readings in Ancient Greek Philosophy (Reeve and Miller), for English sections; selected readings, for Spanish section
Optional trip: Greece - estimated cost, €775 (fall term).
