HIST-393 Special Topics: Spain's Golden Age: 1492-1665

Description: A cultural history course that uses historical, art historical and literary sources to examine the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Golden Age: the age of exploration, discovery, religious conflict and the Inquisition. Topics include the Reconquest of Spain and the war against Islam, Columbus and the Catholic monarchs, the picaresque novel as a historical text, the art and mentality in Counter-Reformation Spain, and Diego Velázquez and the subtle art of social protest. Emphasis on primary texts. (3 Credits)
