Professor: Hamish Binns
Email: binnsh@madrid.slu.edu

PREREQUISITES:
A score of over 460 in the TOEFL (or “P” in ESL-091-M36 Intensive Grammar Review I).

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The objective of this course is to see English in the context of the world, and as a communicative bridge that links together different cultures from all four continents.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course looks at the different dialects and usages of the English language throughout the world, as well as at the different cultures that together form the English speaking world. Where possible, guest speakers will come to the classes to talk about their respective countries. A variety of texts, songs and stories will also be used to prepare students for the Part 1 listening and Part 3 reading sections of the TOEFL exam. Final assessment is based on class participation, homework and exams.

GRADING POLICY:
This course is graded P (Pass) or NP (no pass). Each student is expected to purchase the course packet / file and to keep a record of all the work they do during the course: the course grades will be based on the work registered in each student’s file. The grade awarded must be satisfactory (grade of “C”) in order for students to receive a “P” grade. Those students who demonstrate unsatisfactory performance will be notified by the professor and reminded that continued problems and/or excessive absences will jeopardize their opportunity to continue their academic studies at Saint Louis University. More than six unexcused absences may result in an automatic “no pass.”

Please remember that the purpose of the ESL courses is to aid students in improving their level of English in order to be able to handle academic study at the college level in English. Students will need to achieve the required level of proficiency in English by the end of their 3rd semester, or they will not be allowed to take other academic courses at the university.
