Semester: Spring 2005
Office Hours: M W 11.30 – 12.30
Class Times: M W F 10.00 – 10.50
Professor: Hamish Binns
Email: binnsh@madrid.slu.edu

PREREQUISITES:

A score of over 460 in the TOEFL (or “P” in ESL-091-M36 Intensive Grammar Review I).

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The objective of this course is to focus on the usage and understanding of grammar in different contexts, rather than on overt learning of grammatical rules.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course looks at the “pitfalls” of English grammar as well as at the beauty of expression and communication through grammatical choices. In addition to reviewing and providing practice of grammatical patterns in English (verb tenses, count/noncount nouns, simple and complex sentence structures, article use, etc.), the course will center on exposure to and discussion of grammatical patterns in context. We will examine, compare, and contrast how meaning is construed in different ways through different grammatical structures in a wide variety of texts, from recipes to songs, from short stories to scientific articles. Final assessment is based on class participation, homework and exams.

GRADING POLICY:
This course is graded P (Pass) or NP (no pass). Each student is expected to purchase the course packet / file and to keep a record of all the work they do during the course: the course grades will be based on the work registered in each student’s file. The grade awarded must be satisfactory (grade of “C”) in order for students to receive a “P” grade. The work will be corrected every week – work not corrected in its given moment will not be included in the grading. Those students who demonstrate unsatisfactory performance will be notified by the professor and reminded that continued problems and/or excessive absences will jeopardize their opportunity to continue their academic studies at Saint Louis University. More than six unexcused absences may result in an automatic “no pass.”

Please remember that the purpose of the ESL courses is to aid students in improving their level of English in order to be able to handle academic study at the college level in English. Students will need to achieve the required level of proficiency in English by the end of their 3rd semester, or they will not be allowed to take other academic courses at the university.
