Course Objective:
This course will attempt to provide the student with the necessary support and review to help aid the student with History 112. In addition to reviewing the themes and subjects studied in History 112, the course will also focus on group work, written essays and building listening skills. As with all ESL classes, there will be an emphasis placed on increasing the student’s overall level of English proficiency in order to meet the requirements of study at the college level.
Course Description:
This course will focus on the study of Western Civilization as taught by Professor Garcia-Serrano in History 112. The course will include discussion of primary sources, short review essays and general review of issues and subjects that arise from History 112.
Grading and Attendance:
Class attendance and participation are key! Please let the instructor know if you cannot make it to class as four unexcused absences will result in a lowering of the final grade. Participation in class will be highly encouraged and it will also be reflected as 25 percent of the final grade. Interaction among students and with the instructor is vital to the overall success of the course as well as to receiving a good final grade. This means that anyone who is frequently absent and/or unprepared cannot expect a passing grade.
There will be two midterms and a final examination. These exams will be based on the lectures, required readings, textbook, and issues discussed in class. The final grade will be weighted approximately as follows:
First mid-term exam: 25%
Second midterm exam: 25%
Final exam: 25%
Participation: 25%
TOTAL: 100%

85-89 B+
80-84 B
75-79 C+

60-69 D
0-59 F
Please remember that the purpose of the ESL courses is to aid students in improving their level of English in order to be able to handle academic study at the college level in English. Students will need to achieve the required level of proficiency in English by the end of their 3rd semester, or they will not be allowed to take other academic courses at the university
