ESL-091-M01 Intermediate Listening, Grammar, and Reading

Credits: 1.0
Prerequisite: Placement by TOEFL Exam

Textbook: Deborah Phillips Longman Introductory Course for the TOEFL Test (1996)

Course Description and Objectives

There are three skill components to this course: listening, grammar, and reading. The listening component consists of intensive practice to develop strategies and skills essential to understanding spoken exchanges, short conversations, and longer stretches of spoken discourses such as lectures. Activities include focusing on key ideas, restating topics, identifying suggestions and negatives, and drawing conclusions from spoken expression. The grammar component focuses on recognizing correct syntactic and morphological patterns in English. The reading component develops skills such as determining the main topic, anticipating questions, defining words in context, and recognizing restated information. Final assessment for this course is based on class participation, homework, and exams.

The main objectives of this course are to help learners raise their scores on the TOEFL exam so that they can take on academic study in English as soon as possible, and also to prepare them for the type of academic tasks which they will encounter in subject courses taught in English.

Grading Policy:

This course is graded “P” (Pass) or “NP” (No Pass). Attendance, homework, and active participation are required of all students, without exception. Specifically, students must attend 75% of classes and do all assigned readings and homework assignments. Tardiness may result in absence(s) from class. Performance in these areas, as well as quizzes and partial exams, must be satisfactory in order for students to qualify for the Institutional TOEFL at the end of the semester. Those students who demonstrate unsatisfactory performance will be notified by the professor and then reminded that continued problems may jeopardize their opportunity to take the final exam. Please note that more than 6 unexcused absences may result in an automatic “No Pass,” as well as no admittance to the final TOEFL exam.

Please remember that the purpose of the ESL courses is to aid students in improving their level of English in order to be able to handle academic study at the college level in English. Students will need to achieve the required level of proficiency in English by the end of their third semester, or they will not be allowed to take other academic coureses at the university.

Exam fee:

All students must pay a non-refundable Institutional TOEFL fee to take the TOEFL exam.
