ENGL-493 The Literature of the Spanish Civil War

Offered: Summer 2009
Description: Spain like a rose spreadeagled to a knife. Study of Civil War works by authors of different nationalities. Focus on varied interpretations of historical events, their symbolic rendering in the context of modern utopian thought, and the War as a turning point in modern history and literature. Authors studied include Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, Laurie Lee, Pablo Neruda, Camilo José Cela and André Malraux. Non-English texts may be read either in translation or in original version. (3 Credits)
