ENGL-445 Rakes, Rogues and Rascals: The Picaresque Tradition in English Literature

Prerequisite: ENGL-190; recommended, at least one 200-level English course
Curriculum: Fulfills upper-division literature requirement for A&S and Business; honors credit available for eligible students
Description: A close examination of the not-so-respectable side of the eighteenth-century novel borrowed directly from Spain, with special attention to influences and social implications. Novels under consideration include Smollet's translation of Le Sage's Gil Blas, Defoe's Moll Flanders, Fielding's Joseph Andrews, and Kipling's Kim
