ENGL-411 Language and Linguistics

Prerequisite: ENGL-190; CMM-100 recommended
Curriculum: Fulfills Upper Division Literature Requirement for A&S and Business; Cross-listed with CMM-301, FREN-411, GR-411, RU-411 and SPAN-411
Description: An introduction to theory and methods of linguistics in a survey of features of two languages, English and Spanish. Topics include universal properties of human language and phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic structures. Special focus on the sociolinguistic perspective and the study of language as an aspect of culture. Experience in the study of Spanish is very helpful, but not required.
