ECON-493 European Economic History

Prerequisite: ECON-190 or permission of department chair
Curriculum: Fulfills Economics requirement (pending approval)
Description: Why did sustained economic growth begin in the Old World? And why is it lagging now? A review of economic, institutional and political determinants that preceded the Industrial Revolution and brought on its spread around the world in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. An economic analysis of feudalism, merchant capitalism, mercantilism, industrialization, the factory system, uneven development in Europe (from a Spanish perspective!), imperialism, the Great Depression, the post WW II growth miracle, "Eurosclerosis," and growth prospects for the European Union in the twenty-first century.
