| SOC-293 Archaeological Excavation in Israel, THEO-293 The Bible and the Holy Land. Participate in an archaeological research project in Israel and learn about the cultural context of Bible as well as about the Jewish, Christian and Muslim holy places in the region.During the month of July Prof. Carolina Aznar will direct an archaeological field school in Israel. Participants will excavate at the site of Tel Regev (near Haifa, Israel), learn about the history and archaeology of the region and the formation of the biblical texts, and travel during the weekends to many of the sites in the region (including Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Dead Sea, Qumran, Jericho, Sea of Galilee, Capharnaum, Nazareth, Megiddo, and St. John of Acre). | EAS-105 Introduction of Oceanography (MANDATORY TRIP) Students will go to Spain's southeastern coast (Alicante) to visit research institutes, a desalination site, natural reserves and natural parks to gain first hand understanding of the issues the Mediterranean Sea is facing. The excursion includes a boat ride to Tabarca Island, which provides the opportunity to snorkel in its crystal blue waters and identify the different organisms studied in the course. The students will also have the opportunity to kayak and sail along the coast to observe coastal features and to study the implications of coastal development and the protection measures in place. Price includes transportation, lodging, excursions included in final itinerary, and breakfast. Approx price: 375€ |

| SPAN-508 Spanish Culture & Civilization (MANDATORY TRIP) Roman rebels lurked in the Iberian settlement of Osca during the first century B.C.; later, Charlemagne stopped the Moors from crossing Pyrenees nearby; French troops occupied the city during the Napoleonic wars; and Huesca's citizens witnessed some of the most bitter fighting of the Spanish Civil War. With its spectacular mountain views and Romanesque monuments, the city offers the visitor the story of Spain's changing culture and civilization. Approx price: 250-295€ |

| General interest and recommended for Spanish, Art History and History students. Aranjuez is another city in Spain declared a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO due to its spectacular landscape. It was once a spring and autumn retreat for the Spanish royal family. Just outside the Royal Palace you can find the Jardín de la Isla (Garden of the Island) and its many fountains. Across the road is the Jardín del Príncipe (Prince's Garden), whose riverside walks make it the more interesting of the two gardens. This day trip will take you on the Strawberry Train, a nostalgic journey into the past on a steam locomotive, which follows the old Madrid to Aranjuez rail route, the second Spanish railway line inaugurated in 1851 by Isabel II. | General interest and recommended for Spanish, Art History and History students. A special-event train journey to the middle ages. While Sigüenza has been Roman, Goth, Arabic and Spanish Catholic, the city celebrates its medieval heritage each fall by populating its streets with minstrels, walls, pike men, gunners, knights and everything medieval imaginable. The tour includes small-group visits to the town’s castle, cathedral, Plaza Mayor, Plazuela de la Cárcel and Casa del Doncel. Sign up deadline 23rd of June. | SPAN-508 Spanish Culture and Civilization This activity consists in an evening event which entails going to a tablao flamenco in Madrid. Spanish flamenco singers and dancers perform while the audience sits to have a drink or dinner. Dr. Bikandi, along with the SPAN 508 students, will set the date to book the place and will decide whether for tasting tapas in a dinner or just enjoy the show. Approx price: 35-75€ |
