SPAN 418 Spanish Culture and Civilization (MANDATORY TRIP)
Roman rebels lurked in the Iberian settlement of Osca during the first century B.C.; later, Charlemagne stopped the Moors from crossing Pyrenees nearby; French troops occupied the city during the Napoleonic wars; and Huesca’s citizens witnessed some of the most bitter fighting of the Spanish Civil War. With its spectacular mountain views and Romanesque monuments, the city offers the visitor the story of Spain’s changing culture and civilization.

Travel to the Basque countryside of northern Spain and visit the birthplace of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. An opportunity to deepen one's understanding of St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Spiritual Exercises in the place where Saint Ignatius was born and lived. The trip includes a visit to the castle where St. Francis Xavier grew up.
Price: 90 € (Actual cost is 180 €, 50% of which is subsidized by SLU-Madrid Campus)

EAS-105 Introduction to Oceanography (MANDATORY TRIP)
A visit to Spain's southeastern coast to study the main environmental issues the Mediterranean Sea is facing. The field trip includes visit to oceanography institutes, a desalination site, natural reserves and natural parks. The excursion includes a boat ride to Tabarca Island, which provides the opportunity - weather permitting - to snorkel in its crystal blue waters and identify the different organisms studied in the course. The trip also includes kayaking and sailing along the most developed Mediterranean coastlines, to identify coastal issues and successful restoration projects. Price includes transportation, lodging, excursions included in final itinerary, and breakfast.

ECON-395 The Political Economy of the European Union (MANDATORY TRIP)
A first-hand experience during a visit to the European Parliament in Brussels. Meetings and interviews are arranged with dignitaries and decision-makers of the EU. This academic trip is rounded off with an excursion to beautiful Bruges (home of the first stock exchange in Europe). Price includes air transportation, lodging, breakfast, and excursions included in final itinerary.
