The Liberal Arts Core Curriculum

The Arts and Science Core Curriculum is more than a set of required courses; it provides a framework for developing the whole person in keeping with the Jesuit ideal of education.

The Arts & Science Core Curriculum must be completed by all students graduating from the school of Arts & Sciences. The Bachelor of Arts core includes the following majors at SLU – Madrid Campus: Communication, Economics, English, Political Science/International Relations, Spanish Literature & Language.

The Bachelor of Arts Core consists of 51-63 Credit Hours

FOUNDATIONS OF DISCOURSE  3 HR
ENGL-190: Advanced Strategies of Rhetoric & Advanced Writing. Note:  Process of Composition (ENGL-150), or ESL, may be a prerequisite for ENGL-190
FOREIGN LANGUAGE 9 HOURS: Proficiency through intermediate level (210) in a single language, generally by completion of three 3-hr courses in a single language.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY  3 HR A variety of courses at SLU-Madrid fulfill this requirement: CMM-330, ENGL-325, ENGL-333, ENGL-469, HIST-372, POLS-252, POLS-345, SOC-345, THEO-273, THEO-275, WSTD-197
NOTE: This course requirement may do “Double Duty” by satisfying another core, major, minor or certificate program requirement.
FINE & PERFORMING ARTS  3 HR The following courses fulfill this requirement: ARTH-100, ARTH-111, ARTH-112, ARTH-230, ARTH-240, ARTH-250, ARTH-270, ARTH-280, ARTH-293, ART-200, ART-210, ART-215, ART-220, ART-250, CMM-140, MUSC-100, MUSC-140, MUSC-141, MUSC-227, MUSC-330, MUSC-341, MUSC-342 and THR-251
LITERATURE  6 HR
One course must be chosen from any 200-level English literature course. A second course may be chosen from approved 300/400-level English literature courses or an upper division Spanish literature course with readings in the original language (for non-native Spanish speaker only).
SCIENCES  6 HR Two courses in astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, meteorology, or physics.
MATHEMATICS  3 HR MATH-120 or a higher level mathematics course.
WORLD HISTORY  6 HR HIST-111:  Origins of the Modern World to 1500 and HIST-112: Origins of the Modern world 1500 to Present.
PHILOSOPHY 9 HR Three course sequence:  PHIL-105: Self and Reality, PHIL-205: Ethics, and a 300-400 level  Philosophy course.
THEOLOGY 9 HR Three course sequence:  THEO-100:  Theological Foundations, a 200-level course and a 300-level course.
SOCIAL SCIENCE  6 HR Two courses in anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, sociology and communication (CMM-100, 200 and 280 only – for non-communication majors)
